When I was a kid, my mom used to ask me to stop by a kiosk and buy the newspaper and, even though it wasn't for me, I’d be quick to leaf through it before my parents took it. I think that’s where my interest for journalism and communication began: I liked to flip through the pages and be informed about what was going on. After all, knowledge is something that no one can take away from us. Over time, I realized that I was quite curious even for the most banal things and I believe that, for this reason, I never got out of the “why” age. In the 7th grade I already said that I wanted to embark on the world of communication and, until today, I have not said anything else.
Naturally, my path had to go through Communication Sciences, where I graduated from the University of Minho, having chosen Journalism and Information as my area of specialization. In the first year I joined ComUM, the undergraduate students' newspaper, as a sports writer, where I had my first serious contact with journalism. The following year, I was invited to join the board and I was editor of the same section. In addition, I wrote for the culture section and collaborated in the communication department of GACCUM, the Group of Students of Communication Sciences. As I like to be active, at the end of my degree, I did a voluntary extracurricular internship at Jornal de Notícias, where I joined the newsroom of Notícias Magazine and really got to know the world of journalism.
In September 2021 I took the risk of going to live alone in the Spanish capital and attended a degree in Journalism for a semester at Universidad Carlos III of Madrid, under the Erasmus+ project. I had the opportunity to get to know the reality of my field in another context, learn from the best teachers in the area in Spain and work in groups with colleagues of different nationalities. I said goodbye to Portugal with a mix of feelings: adrenaline because I didn’t know what to expect, nostalgia every time I heard the song “Pronúncia do Norte” and enthusiasm, because I knew for sure that I would grow a lot when embarking on this experience. The 20-year-old girl from a small town in Porto and alone in one of the biggest European capitals realized that happiness doesn't have just one address.
My passion and curiosity for the area of communication did not stop there and led me to the Master in Marketing and Strategy.
Outside of academic life, my main interests are travelling, playing sports and getting involved in the most varied projects, namely volunteer activities, which make me get out of my comfort zone and grow on a personal level.

MISSÃO PAÍS (February 2022)
Missão País is a university volunteer project. For a week, I was in Mogofores, in Anadia, to develop activities and interact with the elderly at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia Day Center in Anadia. Essentially, I learned the power of attentive listening and the importance of giving without expecting to receive.
TESTIMONIALS
Diana Carvalho
Director of ComUM 2020/2021
Mariana is, in a very summarized way, what is required of an excellent professional and one of the people that journalism needs to stay alive and growing. When Mariana arrived at ComUM, she immediately envisioned what she would be like during her entire journey there: a girl full of life, initiative and the will to do and learn every day. She quickly ventured into the Sports section and her ability to learn and take the initiative to always do more led her to the position she occupied the following year: editor. In this position, she proved to be an excellent professional, dedicated, respectful, organized, interested and full of creativity, both bringing countless new ideas and being ready to discuss other points of view and organize new works, whether simple articles, interviews, reports on the ground or simply having to organize a range of new writers who arrived in search of guidance.
Sofia Carneiro
Co-editor at ComUM and classmate
Mariana is a very active, dynamic person with a great desire to get to know her surroundings. As a co-worker, we can expect from her an attentive eye for detail and a lot of creativity along with rigor. She is undoubtedly very hardworking and easily integrates into different teams due to her ability to communicate and help.
Linda Förster
Colleague in group work during Erasmus
I met Mariana because we shared two courses in the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. We worked in group projects and created presentations for our classes. Not only Mariana was super helping, understanding and nice to everyone, but she also worked very hard and was diligent on her tasks. Within our group assignments, we had a productive group atmosphere which was also due to Mariana's ability to work in a team. She managed to involve and support everyone in case of questions and always completed her tasks very reliably. Everyone can call themselves lucky to either have Mariana as a teammate, colleague or a friend.
